Endless Roaming (working title) is a 90-minute feature film currently in production and slated for 2014 release.
The film consists entirely of ten men, filmed from behind, and walking in silent solitude through an American landscape that is meaningful to them (rural, urban, suburban, wild, industrial, agricultural, whatever). Each of the men will be from one of the decades of a man's life: 0-10 years old, 10-20, 20-30, 30-40, 40-50, 50-60, 60-70, 70-80, 80-90 and 90-100. 10 men for 9 minutes each = 90 minute film.
In addition to the age differences, the ten men will be from all cultures, parts of the country, occupations, relationship status, lifestyles, etc.
The time of day and time of year will in some sense reflect the ages of a man's life: the 0-10 year old boy will be filmed in the morning sunlight in springtime; the 90-100 year old man will be filmed at twilight in the winter.
On the soundtrack and recorded separately, will be the men's voices speaking of things important to them. Those conversations may take hours to record, in order to yield the meaningful and interesting nine minutes that will end up in the film. Those separately-recorded voices will be flipped from front to back, so that as we are following behind the 90-100 year old man, we will hear the 0-10 year old boy speaking; and as we close the film following the 0-10 year old boy, we will hear the voice of the 90-100 year old man.
Filming the men from the back is intended to grant a sense of dignity and freedom to each man; there will be no pressure to "perform" for the camera. In addition, each landscape through which each man walks will carry a meaning and a charge of its own.
